Jeon Woo-won Arrives in Gwangju After About 43 Hours Since Entry, "Sorry for Being Late"

Around 8 PM on the 29th, headed to Gwangju immediately after police investigation

Arrived at 12:33 AM on the 30th... Schedule proceeds after one day of rest

Recently, Woo Won, the grandson of the late Jeon Du-hwan who exposed allegations of corruption within his family, was arrested by the police on charges including drug use immediately upon his arrival in Korea. He completed the investigation and arrived in Gwangju. It has been about 43 hours since he set foot on Korean soil through Incheon Airport from the United States, where he had been residing.

After finishing the police investigation, Jeon Woo-won got into a broadcasting company’s vehicle around 8 p.m. on the 29th and got off in front of a hotel in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, at 12:33 a.m. on the 30th, about 4 hours and 30 minutes later.

Jeon expressed his desire to go to Gwangju as soon as possible to apologize to the victims and families of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

Getting off in front of the accommodation, Jeon met with reporters and said, "This place, which I am visiting for the first time since I was born, has always been a place I feared and avoided selfishly," adding, "Since this is such a meaningful opportunity and moment, I want to do my best to ease the grievances of the victims and all those who have been hurt."

He continued, "I believe that many people have been hurt and hold grudges because of me and my family," and said, "I hope that through my efforts here, even a little, I can help relieve some of the resentment."

Due to fatigue from the police investigation conducted immediately after his arrival, Jeon took a rest that day to organize his thoughts and planned to meet with the May 18 Memorial Foundation and May organizations (the bereaved families association, the wounded association, and the merit association) on the 31st.

Meanwhile, while staying in the United States, Jeon Woo-won revealed himself as the grandson of Jeon Du-hwan and exposed allegations of corruption such as slush funds within his family through social media and media interviews. He also stated that his grandfather (Jeon Du-hwan) was not a hero but a mass murderer and claimed that his family was living a luxurious life with black money through money laundering.

On the 17th, during a live broadcast, he ingested a large amount of drugs suspected to be narcotics and was transported to a hospital. After recovering and being discharged, he apologized, saying, "My lungs stopped functioning for more than three hours, and my airway was closed. Intubation saved me, and when I opened my eyes, a tube was inserted deep in my throat," adding, "I couldn’t breathe, and my whole body was covered in bruises. I sincerely apologize for causing trouble with my irresponsible behavior. Don’t worry, this will never happen again."

Afterward, expressing his wish to apologize to the May 18 victims and their families, he exchanged messages with the May 18 Memorial Foundation via social media about his schedule in Gwangju and departed from the United States on the 27th, arriving at Incheon Airport at 5:20 a.m. on the 28th.
