Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education 'Disability Student Human Rights Support Group' Appointment Ceremony

The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 28th that it held the '2023 School Year Disabled Students Human Rights Support Group Appointment Ceremony and Council Meeting' in the training room on the 3rd floor of the Special Education Support Center.


The '2023 Disabled Students Human Rights Support Group' aims to protect the human rights of disabled students and prevent human rights violations to realize safe education for all in Gwangju.

The group is composed of 19 professionals, including Kim Seon-seong, head of the Secondary Special Education Division, as the leader, special education experts, sex education experts, social workers, vice principals of special schools, disabled human rights counseling experts, the team leader of the Women and Youth Division of the Gwangju Police Agency, and representatives of guardians.


In particular, for special schools and special classes, they conduct 'regular on-site support' once a month (twice a year for special schools) and 'special on-site support' to prevent secondary damage when incidents such as school violence and human rights violations occur.


Additionally, they plan to expand the operation of '1:1 customized case management support for students and guardians' utilizing the expertise of the human rights support group members.


During this council meeting, multifaceted and in-depth discussions were held on agenda items such as ▲the roles and operation plans of the Disabled Students Human Rights Support Group ▲sharing the results of the 2022 human rights support group school field support inspection ▲support measures for The Bom students (students who have experienced human rights violations such as school (sexual) violence or child abuse, or who are at high risk of human rights violations due to various external environments) ▲and exploring cooperation plans with related organizations for human rights protection.


There was also a time to read the disabled human rights slogan and reaffirm the commitment to practice in order to take the lead in activating human rights protection as the Disabled Students Human Rights Support Group.


Kim Seon-seong, head of the Secondary Special Education Division at the Gwangju Office of Education, said, “We will maintain a close cooperative system among related organizations and committee members to protect the human rights of disabled students,” and added, “We will generously support the role of the Disabled Students Human Rights Support Group to prevent factors causing human rights violations and strengthen the disability human rights capacity of the educational community.”
