A gang member who assaulted a citizen for asking him not to smoke in a bar restroom has been handed over to the prosecution.
The Violent Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 28th that they have arrested and sent gang member A (in his 20s) to prosecution on charges of joint injury.
A is accused of hitting B’s face along with two accomplices in the restroom of a nightlife establishment in Seo-gu, Gwangju, around 3:40 a.m. on December 31 last year, causing injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment.
A and the others committed the assault and fled after B scolded them for smoking in the restroom.
The police caught A at a motel in Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, after a three-month manhunt, and are currently searching for the other two accomplices.
A police official stated, "We will strictly respond with detention and investigation as a principle against organized crime offenders who repeatedly commit illegal acts such as assault and extortion targeting socially vulnerable individuals."
He added, "Considering that some victims do not report incidents due to fear of retaliation or the inconvenience of appearing at investigative agencies, we plan to actively conduct investigations by reaching out to victims."
