Status of Project Implementation for Intensive Management Zones in Fine Dust Vulnerable Areas in Gyeonggi-do
Gyeonggi Province will implement customized local projects such as supporting the installation of fine dust shelters in nine areas within the province, including Seongnam-si Sangdaewon 1-3-dong, designated as 'Fine Dust Intensive Management Zones.'
Fine Dust Intensive Management Zones are areas where the annual average concentration of coarse dust (PM-10) exceeds 50㎍/㎥ or the concentration of fine dust (PM-2.5) exceeds 15㎍/㎥. These zones are designated by mayors, county governors, or district heads in consultation with the Ministry of Environment, focusing on areas densely populated with facilities used by vulnerable groups such as daycare centers and kindergartens.
Since 2020, the designated areas within the province include ▲Seongnam-si Sangdaewon 1-3-dong ▲Osan-si Osan-dong and Wondong ▲Bucheon-si Samjeong-dong, Ojeong-dong, and Nae-dong ▲Icheon-si Changjeon-dong and Jung-ri-dong ▲Anseong-si Manjeong-ri, Yongdu-ri, and Seungdu-ri ▲Yongin-si Pungdeokcheon 2-dong ▲Yongin-si Singal-dong ▲Suwon-si Yeongtong 2-3-dong ▲Suwon-si Pyeong-dong ▲Hwaseong-si Dongtan 1 and 3-dong ▲Pyeongtaek-si Segyo-dong ▲Anyang-si Hogye 3-dong ▲Gimpo-si Pungmu-dong, totaling 13 locations across 11 cities and counties.
Most of these areas are residential zones adjacent to industrial or traffic-dense areas or sites generating scattered dust.
In addition to these areas, the province plans to designate five new Fine Dust Intensive Management Zones this year.
Including the newly designated areas, the province will invest a total of 900 million KRW this year?270 million KRW from the provincial budget and 630 million KRW from city budgets?to support fine dust shelters, fine dust traffic lights tailored to local needs, smart air showers that remove or block fine dust, and window-attached ventilation systems in nine of the 18 zones to protect the health of vulnerable facility users.
Cha Seong-su, Director of the Climate Environment and Energy Bureau of the province, stated, "We will actively support various fine dust reduction and avoidance projects tailored to the characteristics of each city and county to safely protect vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly from high concentrations of fine dust. Through demand surveys by cities and counties and satisfaction surveys of residents, we plan to continuously expand the Fine Dust Intensive Management Zones after reviewing their effectiveness."
