U.S. President Joe Biden on the 27th (local time) urged Congress to pass gun control legislation in response to the shooting incident at a private elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee.
In a White House speech that day, President Biden stated, "We are verifying the facts about what happened and why this occurred."
He criticized, "We need to do more to prevent gun violence," adding, "Guns destroy our communities and tear apart the soul of this country." He continued, "We must do more to protect our schools," emphasizing, "I repeatedly urge Congress to pass the gun control legislation I have submitted."
Earlier, a shooting incident occurred that morning at Covenant School, a Christian private school in Nashville, resulting in the deaths of three students and three teachers. The suspect, a 28-year-old woman who graduated from this school, was armed with two rifles and one handgun and opened fire. She later died during a shootout with police who responded to the report.
President Biden said, "Like the military, all the children and teachers involved in this incident may suffer from post-traumatic psychological disorders," and added, "We must also focus on their mental health."
First Lady Jill Biden also said, "Our children deserve to live better lives," and stated, "We stand with Nashville. We send our prayers."
