The Art Bank and Government Art Bank purchase artworks annually through open calls. This year, the budget for artwork purchases is approximately 1.32 billion KRW.
Applications will be accepted from 9:00 AM on April 3rd until 6:00 PM on April 14th. Applicants may apply to only one of the two open calls, and each individual (or team) may submit only one piece. The categories for submission include Korean painting (Muninhwa), calligraphy, Western painting, sculpture, crafts, printmaking, mixed media (new media and installation works), and photography. The results of the selection will be announced in September.
This year, to ensure no blind spots in the application process, an ‘Easy Guide’ will be provided separately alongside the general notice. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art explained that the ‘Easy Guide’ was developed with the input of individuals with developmental disabilities to improve accessibility, making it easier for people with disabilities and information-vulnerable groups who may find art terminology difficult to understand.
Yun Beom-mo, director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, stated, “We hope that the active participation of promising emerging artists, who will contribute to the promotion of Korea’s culture and arts, will lead to the collection of a more diverse range of contemporary Korean artworks.” He added, “We will continue to hold open calls to revitalize the domestic art market and enhance the public’s right to enjoy culture.”
