Budget support of 150 million KRW... Currently selecting sites for one additional location to be established this year
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) established a ‘Maker Space’ on the 5th floor of Kyunghee Middle School on the morning of the 24th to nurture creative convergence talents equipped with future core competencies.
The district, in cooperation with the Seoul Eastern Office of Education, selected Kyunghee Middle School as the target school to create an educational space where students can learn future core competencies such as creativity, communication skills, and collaboration skills in preparation for the changing educational environment by establishing a hub-type ‘Maker Space’.
With a total budget of 210 million KRW (Dongdaemun-gu Office 150 million KRW, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education 30 million KRW, and the school’s own funds 30 million KRW), a ‘Maker Space’ equipped with digital devices (3D printers, laser cutters, etc.) and various tools for educational and creative activities was created on the 5th floor of Kyunghee Middle School.
The Kyunghee Middle School ‘Maker Space’ is an open space where various activities such as regular classes, practical training, creative activities using 3D printers, idea sharing, and discussions can be conducted. Additionally, a separately established woodworking workshop allows work using sanding machines, drilling machines, and more.
The district has been supporting the establishment of ‘Maker Spaces’ since 2021 to prepare a hub center that can cultivate creative problem-solving skills necessary in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
So far, ‘Maker Spaces’ (6 hub-type and 6 in-school type) have been established in 12 schools in the region. Besides the Kyunghee Middle School ‘Maker Space’ this year, the district is cooperating with the Seoul Eastern Office of Education to select a site for one more location to be established. Schools selected through a public contest will receive 150 million KRW in construction costs.
At the opening ceremony, Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will spare no effort to support the creation of a creative educational environment so that our students can acquire and utilize knowledge necessary for future science through diverse experiences.”
