1954 Military Merit Medal Recipients Decided

Delivered to Bereaved Families After 70 Years

On the 24th at 3 PM, Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam presented the Hwarang Military Merit Medal on behalf of the government to Kim Du-yeol, the nephew of the late Private Kim Pyeong-jon, who distinguished himself during the Korean War, in the reception room.


The late Private Kim was recognized through the Ministry of National Defense’s “Finding Korean War Military Merit Medals” project. Although he was designated as a recipient of the military merit medal during the Korean War, he had not received the actual medal until now. After 70 years, his family finally received the medal.

The late Private Kim, at the age of twenty on November 15, 1950, participated in the Korean War and distinguished himself in the defensive battles in the Chuncheon?Gapyeong area of Gangwon Province the following year, where he died in action.


Kim Du-yeol, the family member who received the medal on his behalf, expressed, “I am grateful to the officials who honored and elevated the late veteran’s dignity for his dedication to the country, and I am proud to receive the medal, albeit belatedly.”


Mayor Hong Nam-pyo stated, “We will never forget the noble sacrifice of the late veteran who devoted himself to protecting the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War,” adding, “We will continue to strive to enhance the honor and respect for veterans’ families.”
