Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Yeong-min) announced that it will newly renovate the area around the Goheung Space Launch Observatory, a representative tourist destination in the region loved by tourists for its views of the Naro Space Center launch pad and the scenic Dadohae Archipelago, into a healing tourism site.
Located in Namyeol-ri, Yeongnam-myeon, the Space Launch Observatory is a structure with one underground floor and seven aboveground floors, which opened in January 2013.
This place features a rotating observatory that offers a fantastic 360-degree coastal view, a space library popular among children, and a VR experience center, attracting many tourists. However, as it has been 10 years since its opening, facility upgrades have become urgently needed.
The county plans to refurbish the infrastructure by reinstalling the observatory deck and railings, constructing a new public restroom in the parking lot, and creating a four-season park by the end of July.
During the renovation period, the 7th-floor observation deck will remain fully operational, and the Nuri rocket launch scheduled for May can be viewed from here.
Once the observatory area is renovated through this project, the beautiful charm of "Goheung, the Roofless Art Museum" will be further highlighted for tourists visiting Goheung, transforming it into a healing tourist attraction that revitalizes daily life and reestablishing it as a representative tourist destination in the region.
A county official stated, "Through this regeneration project, we will newly refurbish the launch observatory area as a healing tourism site and do our best to establish the Space Launch Observatory as a landmark of Goheung by linking it with abundant tourist resources such as Namyeol Sunrise Beach, Mir Maru-gil, and Palyong Mountain Cypress Healing Forest."
Meanwhile, the Goheung Space Launch Observatory is located 17 km in a straight line over the sea from the Naro Space Center, Korea’s first space launch vehicle launch base, allowing vivid viewing of the Nuri rocket launch. With the opening of the Goheung-Yeosu land-sea bridge, the number of tourists entering via Palyong Bridge has been increasing every year, playing a key role as the gateway to Goheung.
