Educational Value Highlighted, Promoting Sustainable Cities for Future Generations

The Pohang Greenway Project is being utilized as a resource for local exploration activities by middle and high school students, garnering significant attention in the field of education.

Greenway Project, Creating a Green City with Pohang's Future Generations Pohang Greenway Youth Forum held in July last year.

The "Greenway Local Exploration Project," created through collaboration between Pohang City and middle and high schools researching region-linked curricula, won first place in the social studies category at the 53rd National Educational Materials Exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Federation of Teachers' Associations last year.

The National Educational Materials Exhibition is held under the slogan "Breaking the Barriers of Chalkboard Education," introducing excellent educational materials to the field and promoting improvements in teaching methods and material development.

The Pohang City "Greenway Local Exploration Project" was developed by teachers from four Pohang middle and high schools?Jecheol Middle School, Daedong Middle School, Idong High School, and Semyung High School?to encourage students to take an interest in their local community and develop problem-solving skills through field experiential learning.

The project consists of 10 stages: ▲Understanding the Pohang City Greenway Project ▲Organizing local exploration clubs ▲Field trips and selection of areas of interest ▲Exploring sustainable development and urban policies ▲Research and investigation of policy proposal cases ▲Report writing ▲Hosting a youth forum, among others.

Additionally, since 2021, the city has introduced the Greenway Project to youth, supported tours of major project sites, and provided materials. Last year, it held the "Greenway Youth Forum," where young people freely shared their opinions.

At the youth forum, presentations by students covered topics such as the operation of green spaces and the creation of cultural spaces related to the Central (urban) Greenway, as well as residential environment issues. The city reviewed the feasibility of youth ideas and provided feedback to schools, fostering communication.

After completing the series of educational programs, students produce workbooks documenting their field trips, collected data, policy proposals, and personal opinions.

Gu Ukha, a teacher at Idong High School, said, "Through local exploration education using the Greenway Project, students not only developed greater affection and interest in their community but also had a valuable opportunity to relate local issues to their own lives and career paths. We plan to continue operating this educational program."

Pohang City stated that it plans to actively support expanding youth community participation activities through the "Greenway Local Exploration Project" beyond the Central Greenway to include the Ocean (marine culture) and Eco (forest recreation) Greenway sectors.

Lee Kyungsik, head of the Greenway Promotion Division, said, "It is meaningful that the Greenway Project, a key policy of Pohang City, can be used as a platform for youth education. We hope that the youth, as the future generation, will take great interest in the sustainable development of Pohang."
