People Power Party Policy Committee Discusses Low Birthrate Measures
The People Power Party is reportedly considering a policy to exempt military service for those who have three or more children before the age of 30 as part of measures to address low birth rates.
According to a party official on the 22nd, the People Power Party recently reviewed such a low birth rate policy at the level of the Policy Committee.
The plan also includes significantly increasing the child allowance, which currently provides 100,000 KRW per month for children from 0 to under 8 years old, to 1,000,000 KRW per month until the age of 18.

This reflects survey results showing that in 27 out of 38 OECD countries, child allowances are paid until after age 16, meaning each child would receive nearly 220 million KRW by age 18.
Additionally, the Policy Committee proposed stopping the government's parental allowance and child allowance support, requiring parents to fully cover kindergarten or daycare costs. The proposal suggests consolidating dispersed subsidies into a single cash payment of 1,000,000 KRW.
The Policy Committee is also considering introducing a "Swedish-style parental leave system" that mandates paternity leave. This system would extend the mandatory paternity leave period to 90 days, equal to that of women.
