The 2nd Volunteer Fire Brigade Day ceremony was held on the 21st at the Yeongyang-gun Culture and Sports Center, attended by about 200 people including volunteer firefighters, fire officials, and executives from local organizations.
Volunteer Fire Brigade Day falls on March 19, combining March 11, 1958, the date when the ‘Fire Services Act’ establishing volunteer fire brigades was enacted, and the fire emergency number ‘119’. This is the second official commemoration following the inaugural event in 2022.
The ceremony, held to honor the volunteer firefighters’ spirit of service and sacrifice, was attended by distinguished guests including Park Jun-ro, Deputy Governor; Kim Seok-hyun, Chairman of the County Council; Park Hong-yeol, Member of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council; and Shim Hak-su, Chief of Andong Fire Station. The event began with a commemorative video for Volunteer Fire Brigade Day, followed by awards for meritorious service and congratulatory speeches.
Seventeen individuals received awards including commendations from members of the National Assembly and the Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, boosting the pride of volunteer firefighters. Eom Ju-gi and Kim Hwa-sun, presidents of the Yeongyang Volunteer Fire Brigade Association, who have always supported not only forest fires but also various incidents and accidents, said, “This ceremony served as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fulfilling our role as guardians of local safety.”
County Governor Oh Do-chang said, “I am proud and grateful to the volunteer firefighters who have always helped at disaster sites such as forest fires in Yeongyang-gun and have sacrificed and worked behind the scenes. I ask that you continue to take the lead in fire safety for the residents.”
