Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Su-hee Meets Korea Expressway Corporation President to Urge Naming of Godeok Bridge

Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Su-hee Meets Korea Expressway Corporation President to Urge Naming of Godeok Bridge

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, Visits Korea Expressway Corporation Headquarters on the 22nd to Urge Naming of Godeok Bridge and Godeok Interchange

Requests Prompt Opening of Expressway Including Godeok Interchange to Improve Traffic Environment in Godeok Biz Valley

Requests Opening of Underpass Tunnel of Expressway for Convenience of Residents in Godeok Gangil 3 District

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, met with Ham Jin-gyu, President of Korea Expressway Corporation, to explain urgent issues in Gangdong-gu, including the naming of the "Godeok Bridge" (tentative name), and requested active cooperation.

On the 22nd, Mayor Lee, who visited the Korea Expressway Corporation in Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk Province, said during the meeting with the corporation’s president, "The naming of the (tentative) 'Godeok Bridge' and 'Godeok Interchange' reflects the wishes of Gangdong-gu residents," adding, "Especially since more than 72,000 residents participated in last year's naming petition campaign, showing their determination, I hope you will actively cooperate to ensure that Gangdong-gu's request is fully realized."

Gangdong-gu has previously emphasized the validity of naming the bridge "Godeok Bridge" by citing reasons such as ▲the use of the single tentative name 'Godeok Bridge' from the early stages of construction ▲the potential confusion for users if named 'Guri Bridge' due to the proximity (within 1.5 km) of 'Guri Amsa Bridge' ▲Godeok-dong in Gangdong-gu being the starting point of the bridge design ▲the construction site passing through a residential area causing residents to endure significant inconvenience during construction while cooperating actively ▲Seoul City’s active cooperation with national policies by paying 53.2 billion KRW in traffic improvement contribution fees to Korea Expressway Corporation for the Seoul-Sejong Expressway construction project.

Mayor Lee also actively campaigned for the naming of Godeok Bridge by visiting residents during commuting hours in early December last year and visited the construction site of the (tentative) Godeok Bridge on January 17 to urge Korea Expressway Corporation officials, including the project director, to name the bridge, concentrating all administrative efforts on this issue.

Currently, Korea Expressway Corporation is conducting a survey of local government opinions to select facility names for the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway, which is about a year away from completion. In response, Mayor Lee personally visited the corporation to urge that Gangdong-gu’s opinions be actively reflected in the final naming decision.

He also requested the prompt advancement of the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway construction project to establish infrastructure for Godeok Biz Valley, which is rapidly emerging as a representative business district in Seoul’s southeastern region.

Godeok Biz Valley is expected to welcome 14 companies by the end of this year, bringing approximately 8,000 workers, but traffic-related infrastructure is severely lacking, making urgent countermeasures necessary. To resolve traffic inconveniences for companies moving in or planning to move in, Gangdong-gu is preparing to introduce route buses passing through Godeok Biz Valley in the second half of this year, emphasizing that the Dongnam-ro connection construction must be completed promptly for this purpose.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for the prompt opening of the expressway, including the (tentative) Godeok Interchange for entry and exit to Olympic-daero, to ensure the successful completion of Godeok Biz Valley.

Additionally, he explained other Gangdong-gu issues related to Korea Expressway Corporation, such as ▲opening and environmental improvement of the underpass tunnel beneath the Metropolitan Area 1st Ring Road to connect Godeok Gangil 3 District and Gangil 2 District living areas ▲installation of soundproof walls to alleviate noise disturbances in the Godeok Gangil public housing district adjacent to the Metropolitan Area 1st Ring Road, requesting active cooperation.
