Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is set to fully launch its 2023 afforestation project aimed at responding to climate change, enhancing carbon absorption, and strengthening forest functions.
The county will invest a budget of 1.9 billion KRW by April to implement projects on 185 hectares of forest land, including economic tree planting for timber supply and short-term income (60 hectares), large tree planting for landscape creation and forest disaster prevention (27 hectares), restoration planting for areas damaged by the large-scale wildfire in 2022 (80 hectares), carbon reduction planting by planting trees around residential areas such as idle land and public green spaces (3 hectares), and melliferous tree planting to ensure stable honey supply (15 hectares).
Additionally, the county has signed a consignment contract with the Hapcheon-gun Forestry Cooperative to carry out the ‘2023 Public-Private Cooperative Forest Management Pilot Project’ in accordance with the Korea Forest Service’s ‘Public-Private Cooperative Forest Management Pilot Project Operation Guidelines,’ and is currently implementing afforestation and forest tending projects.
Jung Dae-geun, head of the Forestry Division, stated, “We will do our best to timely promote the afforestation project to create fire-resistant forest belts that can prevent large wildfires, enhance the economic and public values of forests, and respond to carbon reduction.”
