Support for Pregnant Women's Transportation Expenses... Incheon City Council's 'Low Birthrate Support Ordinance' Passes Standing Committee

As a measure to address the low birthrate issue in Incheon, transportation expenses are expected to be supported for pregnant women.

On the 21st, the Incheon City Council announced that the 'Partial Amendment to the Ordinance on Low Birthrate Measures and Support in Incheon,' which was proposed by Lee Seon-ok (Guk·Namdong 2), passed the standing committee review.

If the ordinance passes the plenary session on the 28th, transportation expenses of up to 500,000 KRW will be provided to pregnant women starting next year.

This transportation expense support for pregnant women is a pledge by Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok, and if implemented, it will be the second among special and metropolitan cities nationwide, following Seoul.

South Korea's total fertility rate was the lowest ever at 0.78 last year, ranking the lowest among OECD countries. In particular, Incheon recorded a fertility rate of 0.75, the third lowest in the country, making it urgent to establish related policies.

Representative Lee said, "Low birthrate is the most urgent issue directly related to the survival of our society," and added, "I will do my best to prepare low birthrate measures not only through this ordinance but also in the future."
