Controversy Over Mentioning Comfort Women at Korea-Japan Talks... Foreign Ministry Says "Politicization Is Not Desirable"

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is "not desirable to politicize the issue domestically" amid controversy over whether the issue of Japanese military comfort women was raised during the Korea-Japan summit.

On the 20th, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official made this remark in response to a report by Japan's Sankei Shimbun. The Sankei Shimbun reported that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida demanded the implementation of the comfort women agreement and the lifting of import restrictions on Fukushima seafood during the meeting with President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, citing diplomatic protocol, asked for understanding that "the specific details of the summit cannot be confirmed." The position that the issues of Japanese military comfort women and Dokdo were not discussed at this meeting was also reaffirmed.
