Accelerating the Creation of Barrier-Free Cities
Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will present sign language videos created together with people with disabilities. The district plans to accelerate efforts to establish a barrier-free city that encompasses all types of disabilities.
Seo-gu, Gwangju (District Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on the 20th that it signed a business agreement titled "Seo-gu Life in Sign Language" with the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Branch of the Korea Deaf Association (Branch President Jeong Yeongdong).
This agreement was made as part of creating a barrier-free city in Seo-gu and generating jobs for people with disabilities. Both organizations agreed to produce and provide various policy and civil complaint information videos in sign language to ensure public information accessibility for people with hearing and speech disabilities.
While the central government and other local governments deploy non-disabled sign language interpreters for sign language services, Seo-gu plans to additionally support people with hearing and speech disabilities to directly plan, film, appear in, and edit the videos.
This is the first project of its kind implemented among local governments nationwide, and Seo-gu plans to use part of the fines collected from violations of parking spaces designated for people with disabilities as a budget for creating jobs for people with disabilities.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, said, "This is a project born from a small but innovative idea," adding, "Starting with this project, we will accelerate efforts to establish a barrier-free city in Seo-gu that encompasses various types of disabilities."
