Two Years Since the Launch of the Supermassive AI 'HyperCLOVA'
"Making the Impossible Possible"
From Education and Healthcare to Roles as Friends and Family
July Release of 'HyperCLOVA X'... Another Innovation
Kim Yoo-won, CEO of Naver Cloud, introducing HyperCLOVA X at the Debut Conference held at COEX, Samseong-dong on the 27th
"HyperCLOVA will become an AI that changes everyday life."
This was the message Naver delivered to the world when it unveiled the massive AI HyperCLOVA two years ago. Over the past two years, Naver has integrated AI technology into most of its services to make AI easily accessible to everyone. The transformation of daily life has begun. In July, through the next-level evolved HyperCLOVAX, it plans to bring about another change in life.
HyperCLOVA, even playing the role of friends and family
Since introducing HyperCLOVA, Naver has launched various services and products under the name "CLOVA." The goal is to help anyone easily use AI in their daily lives to transform their lifestyle. CLOVA is gradually changing the lives of approximately 47 million people who use Naver.
A representative example is the "CLOVA Care Call," a welfare call service for middle-aged and elderly single-person households. Currently, it has established itself as a welfare service in cooperation with over 40 local governments nationwide, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Busan, and Gwangju. The distinctive feature of Care Call is that it maintains a natural conversational flow as if speaking with a real person. The AI remembers past conversations with the user to provide a more personalized dialogue experience.
For example, if the AI asks, "How will you spend the rest of your day?" and the user replies, "It's cold, so I plan to stay home," the AI responds, "Ah, there was a cold wave warning today. Please be careful of frozen water pipes and dress warmly."
There are also devices such as watches, speakers, and lamps that utilize AI technology. In the case of the "CLOVA Lamp," it recognizes text and reads it aloud in a natural voice. Additionally, AI technology that translates foreign languages has been applied to help children with reading.
Moreover, Naver operates dozens of services such as "CLOVA Note," which automatically converts recorded conversations like meeting minutes into text, and "CLOVA OCR," which automatically translates printed text. AI technology is combined with services like search, shopping, and blogs to create various synergies.
Making the unimaginable possible... HyperCLOVAX
As of the end of last year, Naver is conducting 153 research and development projects. Most of these are related to AI and connected to the next-generation massive AI HyperCLOVAX. Reviewing the ongoing research, it appears that not only will it make imaginable things possible, but it will also enable things never imagined before.
If Naver's multilingual processing technology under development is advanced, fear of foreign languages will disappear in the future. It will far surpass the level of Papago, the already commercialized foreign language translation service. It will be possible to interpret foreign news and provide real-time dubbing in various languages, including Korean. Research on handwriting is also underway, enabling faster and easier translation of foreign languages that were previously difficult to translate.
It will also become possible to search for actions of characters appearing in videos. The hassle of fast-forwarding or rewinding videos to find specific scenes in dramas or movies will disappear. Users will be able to easily find specific scenes using keywords like "the scene where the main character gets shot."
Naver plans to gradually realize these imagined possibilities by unveiling the next-generation massive AI HyperCLOVAX in July. HyperCLOVAX is an ultra-large-scale AI that has learned Korean 6,500 times more than ChatGPT. It will also introduce "SearchGPT," specialized in search. A key feature is "multimodal" capability, which can understand complex information such as photos and text together. For example, you can input a photo of your living room and instruct, "Find furniture that suits the living room."
Competing alongside global leading companies
This year, Naver is integrating its AI division "CLOVA" into Naver Cloud to expand into a cloud-based massive AI business ecosystem. The plan is to lead AI technology and service competition in the global market as a company equipped not only with massive AI but also with global-level cloud technology and AI-based business capabilities.
Naver has already achieved results that can compete with global companies in the AI academic field. Last year, Naver presented a total of 107 regular papers at top global conferences covering various AI fields such as natural language processing, computer vision, and speech. These papers recorded over 8,000 citations in 2022 alone according to Google Scholar, demonstrating their influence.
Based on active R&D investment, Naver is expanding its AI research innovation ecosystem with major domestic and international research institutions such as Seoul National University, KAIST, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), and the University of T?bingen in Germany.
