Survey of 70,000 Barogo Delivery Riders
Average 5.73 Working Days... Up to 120 Deliveries per Day
The average monthly income of full-time delivery riders last year was 3.71 million KRW, which is about 11% higher than the average monthly wage of Korean workers in 2021 (3.33 million KRW).
According to the '2022 Barogo Delivery Report' released on the official blog of the delivery platform Barogo on the 18th, a total of 70,000 riders performed deliveries using Barogo last year.
Among them, the average monthly income of full-time riders working more than 36 hours per week was 3.71 million KRW.
66.6% of full-time riders earned more than 3 million KRW per month, and among them, 24.8% had a monthly income of over 5 million KRW.
Previously, in 2021, among riders earning more than 3 million KRW per month, 26.7% earned over 5 million KRW monthly, so the figure slightly decreased in 2022.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, delivery apps enjoyed a boom, and high earnings of delivery riders often became a hot topic, but these are exceptional cases. After deducting costs such as vehicle maintenance, fuel, insurance, and vehicle depreciation, the actual net income in hand is much lower.
According to a report titled ‘Minimum Wage Application Measures Examined Through the Living Conditions of Platform Workers,’ prepared by the Korea Labor and Society Institute in April last year as an advisory policy research project for the Minimum Wage Commission, the estimated net income after deducting costs from the average monthly income of delivery riders was approximately 1.604 million KRW.
Last year, large-scale sports events such as the Beijing Winter Olympics and the World Cup temporarily boosted the use of delivery apps, but after the lifting of social distancing measures and increased outdoor activities, the overall delivery app market has slowed down.
Average Working Days 5.73 Days... Cases of Handling 120 Orders a Day
The average number of working days per week for full-time riders on Barogo was 5.73 days, slightly up from 5.48 days in 2021.
The rider with the highest number of deliveries last year among Barogo riders worked in Songdo, Incheon. This rider handled 120 orders per day and drove an average of 200 to 250 km daily.
Riders who performed 'bundle deliveries' had about 24% higher route efficiency (deliveries per hour) compared to those who delivered single orders. This difference widened to about 37% during the peak delivery season in winter.
The total transaction volume of goods delivered by Barogo riders last year was 4.9 trillion KRW. Considering that the total domestic online food service market transaction amount was 26 trillion KRW last year, about 18.8% of deliveries were made through Barogo.
