As consumers increasingly prefer large TVs, it is forecasted that the average TV screen size will grow to over 55 inches. It was also pointed out that China is rapidly catching up in the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) sector, where Korea maintains a technological lead.

In the long term, it is advised that Korea should foster the IT display industry for devices such as laptops and tablets. Since Apple may equip OLEDs in the 'iPad Pro' (tablet) followed by the 'MacBook Air' (laptop), Korean companies need to accelerate their response speed.

On the 15th, overseas market research firm Omdia held a 'Display Industry Presentation' at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, announcing these points. About 300 display industry officials packed the venue.

David Xie, Omdia’s Senior Research Director, cited TV replacement cycles, large TVs, and mobile OLEDs as the 'Top 10 Topics in the Display Industry.' He emphasized the growing demand for large TVs. Xie said, "In the long term, consumer demand will increase, and the average TV screen size will exceed 55 inches," adding, "Considering the price per unit area, buying a large TV is more advantageous than a small or medium-sized one."

He also noted that large TVs are popular overseas. Xie stated, "During China’s Singles’ Day, sales of TVs under 60 inches decreased while sales of TVs over 65 inches increased, and during North America’s Black Friday, TVs over 65 inches sold well," adding, "It has become more important how large the TV sold is rather than how many units are sold."

Jung Yoon-sung, Omdia Managing Director, also said, "Large TVs over 75 inches have become much cheaper, so there is some market demand, and customers who want smaller monitors tend to buy products under 30 inches," adding, "The 50-inch product has become a 'middle size' that is neither here nor there."

Omdia "TVs Focus on Large Sizes, Laptops Highlight Apple MacBook Air" Director Park Jin-han of Omdia forecasted the mid- to long-term display industry at the 'Display Industry Presentation' hosted by Omdia on the 15th at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The lecture topic was 'The Display Industry Going Through the Most Difficult Period in History.'

Omdia pointed out that China is rapidly catching up in the mobile OLED sector. Xie said, "As a result of Chinese OLED manufacturers aggressively increasing (mobile) OLED production capacity, their global market share is expected to rise from 11% in 2019 to 30% this year," adding, "In particular, BOE has been increasingly penetrating Apple models from last year’s iPhone 14 to this year’s iPhone 15."

Omdia urged Korean panel companies to accelerate the development of IT OLEDs for laptops and tablets. Director Park Jin-han said, "There are rumors in the market that Apple may adopt OLED in the MacBook Air (laptop)." The MacBook Air sells about 20 million units annually, roughly twice the 10 to 12 million units of the iPad Pro (tablet). Park said, "If Apple introduces OLED in the MacBook Air, the growth rate of the OLED panel market for laptops could be faster than expected."
