Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 13th that it will actively promote the ‘Kko(kot)dume Resource Circulation Village Living Lab’ project centered around Sansu-dong, following its selection for the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Smart Green City Creation Project’ worth 9.3 billion KRW.

Since being the only district in Gwangju selected for the Ministry of Environment’s public contest in December 2020, Dong-gu has completed related administrative procedures and plans to concretize six detailed projects for the ‘Kko(kot)dume Resource Circulation Village’ to achieve the goal of ‘2045 Carbon Neutral Dong-gu.’

First, starting from the end of this month, Dong-gu will promote the construction of the ‘Eco-friendly Resource Circulation Center (tentative name)’ aiming for completion by December, to be used as a smart resource circulation and education hub where residents can directly participate.

To realize a ‘sustainable future environmental city’ where humans and the environment coexist, the district will implement ▲ zero-waste living lab establishment (resident participation app) ▲ installation of AI (artificial intelligence) volume-based waste collection bins and recycling collection machines ▲ establishment of re & upcycle platforms, with participants receiving rewards.

Additionally, to protect residents’ health from the climate crisis, the district will apply ‘heat-blocking coating (Cool Pavement)’ to alleviate heatwaves, promote village greening projects, and install and complete fine dust reduction, air cooling, and heated benches at eight smart rest areas including Sansu Cultural Square and Sansu Five-way Intersection.

For the systematic operation of the ‘Kko(kot)dume Resource Circulation Village,’ Dong-gu plans to prepare a mid- to long-term phased roadmap along with related institutional improvements such as ordinance enactment, council formation, and operation guidelines.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “Building on the fruitful results achieved through various environmental innovation projects with residents, we will accelerate the creation of a ‘low-carbon eco-friendly ecological city.’ We will continue to do our best to introduce smart services across all fields including administration, environment, and sanitation so that residents can enjoy a convenient and happy life.”
