The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will conduct eight special inspections through the end of the year, starting with a check on violations related to tuition fees from the 9th of this month to the 7th of next month, to strictly address illegal private education activities.
This special inspection is part of measures to curb the increase in private education expenses, based on the "2022 Survey on Private Education Expenses for Elementary, Middle, and High School Students" announced by Statistics Korea, and was prepared to actively respond to illegal private education activities such as excessively raised tuition fees.
During the special inspection period for violations related to tuition fees, all violations related to tuition fees will be checked, including excessive collection of tuition fees taking advantage of steep inflation, compliance with tuition fee posting, unregistered changes in tuition fees, and non-refund of tuition fees.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education plans to conduct a total of eight special inspections, including this special inspection, targeting △ illegal activities of academies for young children △ illegal camp operations and advertisements inducing advanced learning during school vacations △ high-cost entrance exam and unregistered educational facilities (unauthorized educational institutions) △ inspections of high-cost college admission counseling and guidance academies.
In addition, to ensure efficient special inspections, the "Academy and Other Unfair Advertising Monitoring Project" will be conducted concurrently. Illegal violations occurring online will be identified through monitoring by specialized companies, and illegal academies will be guided and inspected.
Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, "Through this special inspection of academies, we will do our best to proactively address illegal tuition fee collection taking advantage of inflation and ensure that illegal private education is eradicated."
