Park Hyun-jung, a member of the Dong-gu Council in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Chairperson of the Special Committee on Climate Crisis Response, announced on the 12th that the "Basic Ordinance on Climate Crisis Response" was passed at the 299th extraordinary session plenary meeting.
The current climate crisis is a very serious situation due to unpredictable climate changes. In the region, ongoing droughts and dry weather are increasing the inconvenience for residents.
According to the special report (2018) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it warns that if the Earth's temperature rises more than 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial average temperature, changes close to a disaster will occur.
To prevent this, carbon emissions must be reduced by 45% by 2030 and brought to zero by 2050.
Councilor Park expressed concern, saying, "Fine dust disappears within a week, but the greenhouse gases emitted by humanity cannot escape the Earth and remain trapped, raising the Earth's temperature and causing the climate crisis. This will be a disaster for humanity passed down intact to future generations."
Councilor Park stated, "The Special Committee on Climate Crisis is planning resident campaigns to achieve carbon neutrality starting from the neighborhood where I live," adding, "We will carry out lectures and various practical activities to promote a shift in awareness throughout the council and administration for responding to the climate crisis."
