The Mokpo-Shinan Integration Promotion Committee (Chairman Choi Tae-ok, hereinafter referred to as the Promotion Committee) held its 2023 launch ceremony on the 10th at the Kim Dae-jung Nobel Peace Prize Memorial Hall.

According to Mokpo City on the 11th, the event was attended by major guests including Park Hong-ryul, Mayor of Mokpo, Park Woo-ryang, Governor of Shinan, Kim Won-i, Member of the National Assembly, Moon Cha-bok, Chairman of the Mokpo City Council, as well as about 100 people including 50 promotion committee members and 28 publicity committee members.

Chairman Choi Tae-ok said in his greeting, “Shinan and Mokpo originally share one root, and many areas such as daily life, culture, economy, and education are intertwined, making Mokpo Shinan and Shinan Mokpo, effectively one body with one mind.”

Following this, Mayor Park Hong-ryul of Mokpo and Governor Park Woo-ryang of Shinan, in their congratulatory speeches, resolved, “In the era of local extinction, let us create a consensus on Mokpo-Shinan integration centered on the private sector, and sincerely and wholeheartedly pool wisdom and capabilities to achieve tourism integration, economic integration, and ultimately administrative integration so that the two regions can develop together.”

Then, appointment letters were awarded to the newly appointed promotion and publicity committee members, and a statement urging integration was announced.

The statement included a request that administrative integration for the mutual prosperity and coexistence of the two regions should no longer be delayed, and that the social leaders and residents of both regions should unite their strength, learning from the six previous failed integration attempts, to ensure that this time the integration bears fruit.

Meanwhile, the Mokpo-Shinan Integration Promotion Committee is a purely private organization composed of about 80 experts and activists from various fields, and since its launch in December 2020, it has been carrying out various activities for the integration of Mokpo and Shinan.

Furthermore, it plans to continue various projects such as promoting sisterhood ties between autonomous organizations of Mokpo City and Shinan County to enable mutual cooperation among residents, operating the Eoul Academy, an educational program for local residents, holding large forums to present development directions and visions after integration, and conducting campaign advertisements.
