Choi Min-jeong (24, Seongnam City Hall), the flagship of the South Korean women's short track speed skating team, won a silver medal in her first medal race at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Championships.
On the 11th, Choi Min-jeong finished second in the women's 1,500m final at the 2023 KB Financial ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships held at Mokdong Ice Rink in Seoul, with a time of 2 minutes 31.448 seconds.
Starting from the outermost lane, Choi Min-jeong conserved her energy by not rushing in the early stages of the race. With 7 laps remaining to the finish line, she moved to the outside lane to increase her speed and quickly rose to second place.
Trailing the leader Suzanne Schulting (Netherlands) and waiting for an opportunity, Choi attempted to overtake with 3 laps left. She exerted all her strength in the final lap but narrowly failed to surpass Schulting, finishing second at the finish line.
Meanwhile, Kim Gilli (Seohyun High School), who also competed in the same event, collided and fell in the semifinals, dropping to Final B and missing out on a medal. Kim Geon-hee (Dankook University) also did not make it to the final stage. The World Championships are the most prestigious international competition after the Winter Olympics, and this is the first time in 7 years that the event has been held in Korea since the 2016 Seoul Championships.
