Key Materials for the First SMR in the US
Reactor Scheduled for Production in the Second Half of the Year
Doosan Enerbility, which is promoting a global SMR foundry (production-specialized company), has officially started manufacturing SMR (Small Modular Reactor) materials.
Doosan Enerbility announced on the 10th that it has signed a contract with NuScale Power to manufacture SMR materials. These materials will be used in the UAMPS CFPP (Carbon Free Power Project) plant, which NuScale Power is advancing as the first SMR project in the United States. UAMPS is a power operator in Utah, USA. The plant, being constructed in Idaho, aims for completion in 2029 and plans to install six reactor modules, each with a capacity of 77 MW, producing a total of 462 MW of power.
Since 2019, Doosan Enerbility has been conducting SMR manufacturability reviews and prototype production with NuScale Power. In April last year, they signed an agreement to start SMR manufacturing and completed the mold production necessary for reactor material manufacturing. Under this contract, Doosan Enerbility will produce key materials such as large forgings, steam generator tubes, and welding materials required for manufacturing six reactor modules for the UAMPS CFPP plant, and plans to begin reactor manufacturing by the end of this year. Additionally, Doosan Enerbility and NuScale Power are cooperating to produce additional equipment for follow-up projects scheduled for completion around 2029.
Kim Jong-du, Head of Nuclear BG at Doosan Enerbility, stated, "The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently legislated the certification of NuScale Power's innovative SMR design, proving that NuScale SMR is leading the global SMR market. Doosan Enerbility is honored to participate in the NuScale SMR manufacturing project, which is a clean, carbon-free energy project responding to climate change."
John Hopkins, President of NuScale Power, said, "This contract clearly shows that the NuScale SMR project has progressed to the reactor manufacturing stage and that NuScale Power is leading the SMR market aiming for construction in the late 2020s. With a strong partnership with the experienced partner Doosan, NuScale Power has established a solid global supply chain and can respond to the growing global interest in NuScale SMR."
NuScale Power was the first SMR to receive the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's standard design certification in 2020. To date, the NuScale Power model is the only one to have received this certification. NuScale Power is successfully carrying out the UAMPS CFPP project in the U.S. while expanding its SMR business globally across Europe, Asia, North America, and South America.
