The Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Chairman Kim Tae-wan) has embarked on an on-site visit regarding the designation of the former Gwangsan Police Station as a 5·18 historic site.
According to the Gwangsan District Council on the 8th, the council members visited the site of the former Gwangsan Police Station and expressed their position requesting its designation as a historic site of the 5·18 Democratic Movement.
The former Gwangsan Police Station was a place where civilian women were collectively detained during the 5·18 incident. After the police station was relocated to Unsudong in 2005, only the site remains in Songjeong-dong.
This on-site visit was promoted to reflect on the historical significance of the 5·18 movement and highlight the necessity of designating the site as a historic place, led by female council members of the Gwangsan District Council in commemoration of International Women's Day on March 8.
Currently, there are a total of 29 officially designated 5·18 historic sites in the Gwangju area, but none are located in Gwangsan District.
Recently, there has been active movement centered around Gwangsan District and related organizations to designate the former Gwangsan Police Station site, along with Gwangju Songjeong Station, which was a gathering place for citizen militias, as 5·18 historic sites.
Councilor Yoon Hye-young said, “The former Gwangsan Police Station is a historic site where female activists who participated in the 5·18 Democratic Movement endured hardships. This activity is especially meaningful as it coincides with International Women's Day. We plan to continuously request the city to designate it as a 5·18 historic site so that the spirit of May does not remain in the past but is properly inherited and developed.”
