On the 8th, Han Hoon, Commissioner of Statistics Korea, delivered a special lecture titled "The Role of Statistics Korea in the Digital Platform Government" to director-level executives from all ministries participating in the 31st Senior Policy Course at the National Human Resources Development Institute in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do.
In the lecture, Commissioner Han defined the role of Statistics Korea in the Digital Platform Government as the production and improvement of national statistics, support for data-driven policy making, and provision of life-centered statistical information services, emphasizing that the role of Statistics Korea must be strengthened.
The Digital Platform Government refers to a government that actively creates new value through data-based policy decisions on a "digital platform" where all data is connected.
As the environment for statistics compilation changes, Statistics Korea is improving the production methods of national statistics by introducing smart survey methods such as electronic surveys instead of traditional field surveys and utilizing administrative data. In particular, it plans to actively produce timely statistics using private sector big data.
Statistics Korea plans to actively support the government's data-driven policy making by establishing statistical registry management systems in areas such as population/households/housing, enterprises, employment activities, and children/youth. The comprehensive pension statistics being developed by Statistics Korea also utilize the statistical registries, and once completed, it is expected to enable the government to implement high-quality old-age income security and welfare policies without blind spots.
Additionally, Statistics Korea will improve the visualization content of the National Statistical Portal (KOSIS) and continuously upgrade life-centered statistical information services such as "Experience My Inflation," "Time Travel with Statistics," and the Statistical Geographic Information Service (SGIS).
Concluding the lecture, Commissioner Han stated, "Now, more than ever, public officials need statistical literacy for the Digital Platform Government," and urged, "We must strengthen statistical literacy capabilities to accurately understand the trends of the times and possess leadership that suggests the direction to move forward."
