Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, expressed a welcoming stance on the 8th regarding the nationwide first statement urging the establishment of offshore wind power by 10 fishermen’s organizations in Sinan.
He also expressed his determination to devote all efforts to coexistence with the fisheries industry, job creation, and fostering Jeollanam-do as a global hub for offshore wind power.
According to Jeollanam-do, the Sinan-gun Fisheries Association urged the government on the 2nd to promptly promote the offshore wind power complex and establish reasonable compensation measures, marking the first time a fishermen’s organization has done so. This is significant as it created a turning point in securing resident acceptance, the biggest challenge in promoting offshore wind power projects.
The Sinan offshore wind power 8.2GW development project is expected to create 120,000 quality jobs by investing 48.5 trillion KRW by 2030.
It is also anticipated to generate an annual income of 300 billion KRW for residents, improve fishermen’s welfare, and revitalize the local economy.
Jeollanam-do plans to make its best efforts to ensure the smooth promotion of the offshore wind power project by creating a coexistence environment with fishermen, establishing reasonable compensation measures, revitalizing the local economy, and creating jobs.
In particular, it will thoroughly secure the offshore wind power grid through the designation of the Sinan cluster complex and additionally secure resident acceptance, as well as actively engage in port development to create an offshore wind power industry ecosystem.
Governor Kim said, “We will strive to attract offshore wind turbine companies to create an industrial ecosystem, establish a local product preferential purchase system, and play a leading role in regional development by creating quality jobs.” He added, “I ask for the active cooperation and support of the residents so that the offshore wind power complex is properly established and Jeollanam-do can be positioned as a global hub for offshore wind power leading the future renewable energy-based industrial ecosystem.”
