The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on the 6th that it held a corporate meeting on the 3rd in Eschborn, Germany, to closely support companies entering the European Union (EU) in complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
On the 3rd, at the 'EU Local Business Meeting for Close Support of GDPR Compliance' held in Eschborn, Germany, KISA Director Lee Won-tae (second from the left in the very first row) is taking a commemorative photo with officials.
To support Korean companies entering the EU in responding to GDPR, KISA established and operates the EU Personal Data Protection Cooperation Center in Germany since November 2021. The Cooperation Center handles tasks such as GDPR-related consultations, training, and providing specialized materials.
This year, KISA plans to continuously hold corporate meetings involving data protection officers to listen to the difficulties companies face on-site in the EU. This meeting was attended by 12 companies, including KDB Industrial Bank, LG Innotek, HL Mando, Shinhan Bank, Hanwha, and Hyundai Corporation.
At the meeting, the Cooperation Center explained response methods focusing on the review opinions of the German data protection authority regarding major issues previously raised by companies, conducted on-site Q&A, and discussed future support plans. Key inquiries included the legal basis for monitoring employees' emails at the workplace, restrictions on employees' rights to access personal data, and the basis and scope of providing personal data when renting housing.
Director Won Tae Lee stated, "This meeting was an event to support GDPR compliance for companies entering the EU, providing an opportunity to listen to difficulties related to personal data protection experienced locally and to seek practical solutions." He added, "KISA will continue to hold regular meetings to actively understand and support the needs of companies."
