Gyeonggi Province is investing 1 billion KRW this year to promote the 'Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)' project targeting nighttime pedestrian path improvements in Seonbu-dong, Ansan City, and Yanggok-ri, Gimpo City.
The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design project refers to urban environmental design that analyzes the environmental characteristics of crime-prone locations to directly prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime.
This year's project target areas are two locations: ▲Seonbu-dong area in Ansan City, which is adjacent to a multicultural special zone with many foreign residents and densely packed multi-family houses, and ▲Yanggok-ri area in Gimpo City, where the residential environment is poor and safety is vulnerable due to aging buildings.
The province previously selected the two final project sites by evaluating safety vulnerability levels, willingness of city/county governments and residents to participate, feasibility of project content, and development potential among eight regions that participated in the city/county contest held in December last year.
This year, the province will proceed with the project through a basic design process that includes gathering opinions from residents and related organizations such as police stations and analyzing environmental characteristics by region. Local residents will participate in all processes from the design stage to construction, and the project’s completeness will be enhanced through consultation with CPTED experts.
Specific project contents include improving nighttime pedestrian paths vulnerable to crime, expanding alleyway lighting to eliminate crime blind spots, installing security CCTV and emergency bells, and preparing community spaces for residents by maintaining parks and vacant lots.
A provincial official stated, "We will expand safe and pleasant residential environments that residents can feel, focusing on crime-prone areas such as old downtowns, foreigner-dense areas, and women’s safety zones, to respond to the changing crime environment."
Meanwhile, since enacting the nation’s first 'Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Ordinance' in 2013, the province has supported a total of 3.85 billion KRW across 38 locations to promote resident living environment improvement projects for crime prevention.
