"Car That Elevates Itself on Rough Roads" Jointly Developed by Hyundai Motor and Mobis

A system capable of automatically adjusting vehicle height in necessary situations has been developed. It can be applied to electric vehicles with batteries placed underneath the vehicle and purpose-built vehicles (PBVs) designed to enhance boarding and alighting convenience.

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 5th that it has developed a vehicle height automatic adjustment system (ELC) in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company. The system operates in various environments such as rough roads, highways, and parking lots. Currently, the system is installed on test vehicles to verify technological reliability and component durability.

The vehicle height can be adjusted up or down by up to 60 mm according to driving conditions. Using an electric hydraulic pump, all four wheels?front and rear?can be adjusted. Sensors detect changes in vehicle height based on driving speed and load, enabling automatic operation, with manual control available if needed. In the future, technology will be developed to adjust vehicle height by linking front road surface scanning cameras and navigation information.

Adjustable height protects the battery placed on the vehicle floor of electric vehicles. At high speeds, lowering the vehicle height minimizes air resistance, thereby increasing cruising range. High-performance vehicles can lower their center of gravity to enhance driving performance.

PBV vehicles, widely used for delivery purposes, also benefit from easier loading and unloading of cargo and passenger boarding and alighting. While vehicle height adjustment is partially possible with air suspension, it is expensive.

Park Jung-hoon, head of Hyundai Mobis Safety Parts Lab, said, "With the implementation of various functions, this will attract attention in the future mobility market."
