Seoul City to Install Over 20 'Diagonal Crosswalks' Again This Year

Completion of Expansion of 25 Diagonal and Other Crosswalks Last Year

Seoul City announced on the 5th that as a result of continuously promoting the expansion of crosswalks, a total of 25 crosswalks were installed and opened last year. This year, the city plans to continue creating a convenient and safe walking environment for citizens by adding about 20 more crosswalks.

The city has been implementing various traffic policies in line with the paradigm shift from vehicle-centered to people-centered traffic policies. In particular, diagonal crosswalks, known as ‘scramble crosswalks’ or ‘X-shaped crosswalks,’ significantly reduce the inconvenience of pedestrians having to detour around intersections. Additionally, since all vehicle traffic stops during pedestrian signals at these intersections, they provide an environment where pedestrians can cross the street safely and confidently. Accordingly, last year, the city installed diagonal crosswalks at 17 locations, including the intersection in front of GS Gangseo Tower and the Hong Eun Bridge intersection, enabling pedestrians to use crosswalks safely and conveniently.

Furthermore, crosswalks were additionally installed at pedestrian inconvenience points where walking routes were disconnected or lane crossing was necessary, enhancing pedestrian convenience. At eight locations, including Seocho Station intersection and Nakseongdae Entrance intersection, which were pedestrian inconvenience points, ‘ㄷ’-shaped crosswalks were improved to ‘ㅁ’-shaped crosswalks, and single crosswalks were installed, resolving the inconvenience of pedestrians having to take long detours to cross lanes and greatly improving traffic safety.

This year, Seoul City will add diagonal and general crosswalks at more than 20 pedestrian inconvenience points requiring additional crosswalk installation, such as the Eungam Market intersection. To continuously expand crosswalks, the city plans to actively identify sites for crosswalk installation and promptly proceed with administrative procedures such as design and traffic safety facility reviews.

Yoon Jong-jang, Director of the Seoul City Urban Transportation Office, stated, “Since crosswalks are very important traffic facilities directly related to pedestrian safety, we will actively promote improvement measures tailored to regional characteristics through thorough analysis and reflection of on-site conditions.” He added, “We will do our best to create a safe and convenient walking environment so that citizens can feel the convenience in their daily lives.”
