Professor Lee Bo-kyung of Dong-A University Selected for 'Hanumulpagi Basic Research' Project

Professor Bo-Kyung Lee of the Department of Food and Nutrition at Dong-A University has been finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘Hanumulpagi Basic Research’ project.


Hanumulpagi Basic Research is a program newly established this year by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea to provide long-term support for young and outstanding researchers to achieve world-class research results in a single field.


The program supports researchers who obtained their Ph.D. within the last 15 years with approximately 200 million KRW per year for 10 years.


Professor Lee will study ways to enhance human adaptability to new environments beyond Earth by developing probiotics (microbial) materials tailored for space travel during the project period.

Professor Lee said, “Being selected for this research project was not just my effort alone but was made possible with the generous support of senior and fellow professors and the help of students belonging to the Food Microbiology Laboratory,” adding, “I will strive to contribute even a little to the development of the university through good research outcomes.”


She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, USA, and joined Dong-A University in 2019.


Dong-A University has had a total of 12 projects selected in the first half of 2023 under the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Individual Basic Research Program, receiving support of approximately 5.48 billion KRW. The selected projects include Hanumulpagi Basic Research and six mid-career research projects, three early-career research projects, and two excellent new researcher projects.


The Ministry of Science and ICT selected 1,634 projects for the newly established Hanumulpagi Basic Research and other individual basic research programs in the first half of this year, providing a total of 218.1 billion KRW in support.
