Gangjin-gun, Jeolla Byeongyeongseong Festival... In-Person Event Held After 4 Years

Providing Attractions Linked to the Samsip-ri Cherry Blossom Festival Path

Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do will hold the 26th Jeolla Byeongyeongseong Festival for three days from March 31 to April 2.

According to the county on the 28th, the Gangjin-gun Festival Promotion Committee held a standing committee meeting on the 20th of last month and finalized the schedule for the Jeolla Byeongyeongseong Festival.

To provide richer attractions for tourists visiting Gangjin, the festival will be held in conjunction with the ‘Geumgoksa Cherry Blossom Thirty-ri Road Festival,’ reflecting public opinion to hold it during the cherry blossom blooming season.

The festival site will be decorated with a Joseon-era atmosphere, including a Joseon tavern, Joseon clothing experience, and Byeongyeong Nanjang operation.

There will also be plenty of attractions such as traditional games that tourists can participate in, the changing of the guard ceremony, tightrope walking, and martial arts performances.

The festival will be expanded to major nearby tourist sites such as the Hamel Memorial Hall and Hangolmok near Jeolla Byeongyeongseong to revitalize the region.

Gang Jin-won, the county governor, said, “This will be an opportunity to relieve residents’ thirst for local festivals and revitalize the local economy, which has been sluggish due to the economic downturn. I hope everyone creates happy memories at the Jeolla Byeongyeongseong Festival, which offers various attractions and entertainment in the blooming spring.”

Jeolla Byeongyeongseong was the army headquarters that oversaw 53 provinces and six frontier posts, including Jeollanam-do and Jeju Island, for over 500 years during the Joseon Dynasty. Although the buildings and relics inside the fortress have been lost, the fortress walls remain clearly, and the county is restoring them to preserve their historical significance.

Opposite the east gate of Byeongyeongseong is the Hamel Memorial Hall. Hendrick Hamel, who first introduced Korea to the West, was exiled to Byeongyeongseong and stayed there for about seven years. In Hangolmok, Byeongyeong-myeon, the walls built at that time remain in their original form.
