Next-Generation Writer Choi Hyekyung Successfully Holds FOOD COMA Exhibition in London

Next-Generation Writer Choi Hyekyung Successfully Holds FOOD COMA Exhibition in London [Writer Choi Hye-kyung]

The works exhibited in the ongoing exhibition "FOOD COMA" by Korean artist Choi Hye-kyung at the Carl Kostyal Gallery in London have garnered acclaim from the global art critics and collectors, becoming a hot topic.

Choi Hye-kyung graduated from Chung-Ang University and earned her master's degree in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She has received love calls from New York galleries such as Harper’s (NY/LA/Hampton), Jeffrey Deitch (NY/LA), and Anton Kern Gallery (NY), participating in solo and group exhibitions. Recently, she has been offered an exclusive artist contract by Harper’s Gallery in New York, establishing herself as a marquee star.

Choi’s works are known for their intense colors, refreshing brushstrokes, and three-dimensional surfaces, showcasing her unique style. As a Korean woman, she continuously questions the expected roles and attitudes of women in society, reconstructing surreal narratives from undefined figures and backgrounds through a contemporary perspective. These works, formed from new entities and life forms, also hint at mythological elements.

Choi stated, “The figures or entities in my works are often inspired by the female body, but the boundaries regarding gender identity or subjectivity are frequently ambiguous. This questions what the body means in society and the demands and attitudes toward individual identity. My works intend for the audience to experience the familiar and unfamiliar through dramatic elements within the world created by the artist.”

In particular, the piece "Still Life with Dead Game," included in this London solo exhibition, was inspired by Baroque-era still life paintings that expressed transcendental values through depictions of inanimate objects, and reinterpreted in the artist’s own way.

Meanwhile, Choi Hye-kyung, who has created works reflecting her cultural background as a Korean woman in various contexts, continues to present works with concentrated narratives like the current London exhibition. Her next exhibition is scheduled to be held at Harper’s Gallery in New York in 2024.
