Seoul City Waterfront Vitality Hub Final Selection in Competition… Secures 3 Billion KRW in City Funds

▲Improvement of access roads ▲Creation of rest and observation spaces ▲Construction of terraced resting decks connecting Jangjicheon Cherry Blossom Path

Reborn as Seoul’s representative waterfront emotional space linked with ‘Songpa-daero Premium Street’ Zone 4 (Jangji Station~Bokjeong Station)

Songpa-gu Jangjicheon to Create 'Seoul Venice' Perspective View of Jangjicheon Waterfront City Development

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it has been finally selected in the Seoul City Waterfront Vitality Hub Creation Project competition with the theme ‘Into a Romantic Daily Life, Venice City Songpa Found at Jangjicheon’ and secured 3 billion KRW in city funds.

The project site is the Jangjicheon area extending from 803-18 to near 237-3, Jangji-dong, covering an area of 11,000㎡. Walking trails and bicycle paths have been established along the stream, and it boasts a favorable location adjacent to distribution, commercial facilities, and residential complexes. The district plans to add distinctive features to Jangjicheon, which has been relatively unknown despite its advantages, and transform it into a ‘waterfront emotional space’ loved by more residents.

‘Venice City Songpa Found at Jangjicheon’ aims to strengthen Jangjicheon as a center for meeting, rest, and cultural enjoyment, as well as a waterfront vitality hub in the southeastern area of Seoul.

First, to enhance accessibility to Jangjicheon, the access roads will be improved. A connecting deck will be constructed under the Beodeul 1 Bridge to facilitate movement along the paths around Jangjicheon. Additionally, a new deck will be built linking the nearby commercial facility Garden Five with Jangjicheon, improving pedestrian convenience for residents accessing Jangjicheon from the city center.

Plans include creating a resident-friendly waterfront space by installing observation decks and natural experience areas along the stream. Observation decks will be installed in some sections to allow rest and ecological observation, and family-friendly resting spaces will be created to provide children opportunities to interact with nature.

Terraced resting decks will be constructed utilizing the elevation difference between the upper cherry blossom path and the lower walking trail along Jangjicheon, providing leisure spaces for residents. The sloped surfaces of the stair decks will be designed gently and widely to create an urban healing space where all generations can stay, and this space will be reborn as a new cherry blossom attraction.

Moreover, the district plans to include this project plan in the basic design study for Zone 4 (Jangji Station~Bokjeong Station), the ‘Gateway Street’ of the ‘Songpa-daero Premium Street Creation Project,’ which is a core pledge, to enhance connectivity and maximize project effects. The district will complete the basic design study with the Seoul City Waterfront Emotional City Division and then establish the detailed design to complete the Jangjicheon Waterfront Vitality Hub construction by next year.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “We will devote all efforts to developing Jangjicheon in Songpa-gu into Seoul’s waterfront vitality hub and waterfront emotional landmark, providing leisure spaces for residents and further promoting local economic revitalization.”

Songpa-gu Jangjicheon to Create 'Seoul Venice' Seongbukcheon Moonlight Lanterns

Dongdaemun-gu’s Jeongneungcheon and Seongbukcheon Brightened with Beautiful Lighting

Installation of landscape lighting themed ‘Rivers Where History and Nature Harmonize’ along Jeongneungcheon and Seongbukcheon walking trails

Projection of local symbols, constellations, clouds, etc.… Lights on from one hour after sunset until 10 PM

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has installed new story-telling landscape lighting at 11 locations along the walking trails of Jeongneungcheon and Seongbukcheon to improve river scenery and illumination.

Under the theme ‘Rivers Where History and Nature Harmonize,’ lighting was installed at five locations including Yongdu 1 Bridge on Jeongneungcheon and six locations including Yongma Bridge on Seongbukcheon. The lighting operates from one hour after sunset until 10 PM.

The gobo lights (devices projecting text or images onto floors or structures) installed on the walking trail floors or bridge piers of Jeongneungcheon project local symbols, allowing visitors to explore the landmarks of Jegi-dong through lighting.

In particular, the ‘gobo light’ installed at the entrance of Jegi 1 Bridge on Jeongneungcheon decorates the overpass of the Inner Circular Road, which previously impaired the river view, with images of constellations and clouds, creating an effect as if looking up at the night sky, attracting attention.

Additionally, landscape lighting themed on the natural state of the old Seongbukcheon has been installed along the Seongbukcheon walking trail, offering various visual attractions. For example, near Yongdu Elementary School, round lights floating on the waterway create a dreamy atmosphere as if moonlight is shining on the stream, and the opposite embankment is adorned with colorful rose lights, allowing visitors to enjoy the view while sitting on benches.

A district official said, “We installed uniquely designed lighting at 11 locations to provide another visual attraction for residents walking along Jeongneungcheon and Seongbukcheon after sunset,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to make the walking trails of Jeongneungcheon and Seongbukcheon healing spaces where anyone wants to walk.”
