Naver Unveils 'HyperCLOVA X'... "Creating a Massive AI Ecosystem"

Naver's ultra-large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) 'HyperCLOVAX' surpassing 'HyperCLOVA' will be unveiled in July. HyperCLOVAX is expected to lead Naver's future by integrating with various Naver services.

On the 27th, Naver held the country's largest developer conference, 'DEVIEW 2023' (hereafter DEVIEW). Kim Yoo-won, CEO of Naver Cloud, announced in the keynote that the ultra-large-scale AI 'HyperCLOVAX,' which can be optimized according to customer objectives, will be unveiled in July. Through HyperCLOVAX, which has learned Korean 6,500 times more than 'ChatGPT,' Naver plans to create a globally competitive domestic ultra-large-scale AI ecosystem.

CEO Kim introduced, "'Team Naver' has consolidated global-level AI technology and capabilities and is ready to join the worldwide wave of change. HyperCLOVAX is an upgraded ultra-large-scale AI that combines customers' proprietary data with HyperCLOVA to instantly provide responses tailored to user needs."

He emphasized, "Introducing hyperscale AI requires astronomical investments and the willingness to take corresponding risks. Naver has secured global-level proprietary technology and infrastructure through 20 years of continuous and steady R&D investment."

Hyperscale AI is used synonymously with ultra-large-scale AI. It is an AI that significantly enhances deep learning efficiency by rapidly processing large volumes of data with supercomputing infrastructure. It dramatically surpasses the learning limitations of conventional AI. OpenAI's GPT-3 and Naver's HyperCLOVA are representative examples.

Naver's agreement with Samsung Electronics last December to develop AI semiconductor solutions is also part of adopting hyperscale AI. CEO Kim explained, "We are jointly developing essential AI semiconductor solutions with Samsung Electronics to reduce service costs, and after the data center in Chuncheon, an AI-specialized data center in Sejong will soon open."

SearchGPT Changes the Search Paradigm

Kim Yong-beom, Chief Scientist of Naver Search US, explained in the subsequent keynote, "SearchGPT, born from the combination of Naver Search and HyperCLOVAX, will change the search market paradigm."

The 'SearchGPT project' utilizes 'OCEAN,' a large-scale language model specialized for Naver Search based on HyperCLOVA. It models 20 years of accumulated user search flow data to guide users optimally to achieve their search goals, better understand search intent and results, and generate answers emphasizing reliability.

Scientist Kim said, "SearchGPT includes statistical information from various Naver services such as Naver search data and real-time updates from content creators like blogs on the latest issues and trends. It continuously collects official websites and reference documents from external companies to generate reliable results."

For example, when entering the question, "Where is a cafe in Seongsu-dong open until 10 PM that takes good photos?" it responds by pointing to a specific cafe, saying, "It is a popular cafe with a unique concept where you can take photos with different atmospheres in each space."

SearchGPT is also characterized by applying 'multimodal' interfaces that exchange information through various modalities such as visual and auditory. Even in situations difficult to express in text, users can obtain answers through image input. For instance, if a user uploads a photo of a living room and requests, "Recommend furniture that matches the interior," it analyzes the uploaded photo to understand the interior space and displays related shopping information together.

Naver's Ultra-Large-Scale AI Becomes More Powerful with Hyperscale IDC

Sung Nak-ho, Head of Hyperscale AI Technology, explained the competitiveness and strengths of HyperCLOVA X, which secures both functionality and stability. Sung emphasized, "For more specialized and advanced ultra-large-scale AI services, learning must be based on data closely related to the user entities such as individuals or companies," and showcased a demo version of HyperCLOVA X.

He explained, "HyperCLOVAX has learned Korean 6,500 times more than 'ChatGPT' and is an improved AI that can manifest the AI form desired by users. Even with a small amount of data, if combined with customer-owned data, it is possible to build ultra-large-scale AI products optimized for specific services or companies in the relevant domain."

Next, Kwak Yong-jae, CTO of Naver Cloud, introduced the essential AI semiconductor solutions and hyperscale IDC for ultra-large-scale AI services. He emphasized, "Considering that ultra-large-scale AI will become more advanced in the future, an integrated approach to software, hardware, and operating environments is necessary."

CTO Kwak specifically explained, "We are developing a lightweight AI semiconductor solution with Samsung Electronics that has all the functions required for LLM (large language model) computation, training, and inference, with a model size one-tenth that of existing GPUs and more than four times the power efficiency."

He stressed, "The hyperscale IDC in Sejong, which will open this year, is equipped with stable power capacity and cooling technology to efficiently provide AI infrastructure. Operating this AI semiconductor solution at the Sejong IDC will enable an operational scale four times larger than existing GPUs, allowing more efficient and stable operation."

Meanwhile, DEVIEW, which started as an internal Naver technology event in 2008 and opened to external developers in 2010, has established itself as a representative developer conference attracting domestic and international developers from various fields by sharing the latest IT technologies and trends annually. DEVIEW 2023, marking its 15th edition, is held over two days from the 27th at COEX in Samseong-dong with over 3,500 participants.
