Daegu Office of Education Provides Free School Uniforms to 42,000 New Middle and High School Students

30,000 KRW Per Person Limit

Bid Purchase by School

Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 27th that it has secured a budget of approximately 12.7 billion KRW to support school uniforms for about 42,000 new middle and high school students this year, aiming to reduce the financial burden on parents for purchasing uniforms.

The school uniform support program was initially implemented for new middle school students until the 2021 academic year, but starting from the 2022 academic year, the support has been expanded to include new high school students as well.

The beneficiaries are first-year students enrolling in public, private, and national middle and high schools located in Daegu, as well as those transferring from other cities, provinces, or abroad. Each student receives in-kind support for one set each of summer and winter uniforms, with a limit of 300,000 KRW per person. If the uniform cost is less than 300,000 KRW, the remaining amount is used to provide additional items such as sportswear, casual wear, or extra uniforms.

To facilitate this, schools at all levels promote uniform purchases through a school-led purchasing system.

The school-led purchasing system is a method where schools select vendors through an open competitive process to purchase uniforms in bulk, ensuring price stabilization, quality assurance, and transparency in contracts. Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education has been operating this system since the 2015 academic year.

This year as well, the Office of Education expects that supporting uniforms for new middle and high school students through the school-led purchasing system will greatly help reduce the economic burden on parents by strengthening educational welfare policies and stabilizing uniform prices.

Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of Daegu Education, stated, “We will continue to implement various welfare policies so that our students can focus on their studies without economic difficulties, making opportunities broader and burdens lighter.”
