[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] According to a report by the South China Morning Post on the 23rd, cases of banning the use of the AI chatbot ChatGPT for assignments are increasing in university campuses in Hong Kong.
According to the report, Hong Kong Baptist University announced in a letter sent to all students the day before that submitting assignments by taking words or ideas from ChatGPT or other sources including AI technology will be considered plagiarism. They also added that penalties such as point deductions, failing grades, suspension, or expulsion will be imposed for plagiarism or other academic misconduct.
Hong Kong Baptist University is not the first higher education institution in Hong Kong to declare a ban on ChatGPT. The University of Hong Kong also banned the use of ChatGPT last week. The University of Hong Kong stated, "Until discussions are held to decide how to integrate this technology into academia, the use of ChatGPT or similar tools for assignments is currently prohibited."
The concerns regarding this issue are spreading further across Hong Kong's university community. The Chinese University of Hong Kong plans to form a committee to discuss AI-related policies, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has already established procedures for judging plagiarism.
