Intensive Crackdown Conducted for Proactive Prevention of Major Maritime Accidents
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) announced on the 22nd that it will conduct a special crackdown on marine safety violation offenders for about three months from the 20th of last month to May 26th to proactively prevent marine safety accidents and protect the lives of the people.

The main targets of the crackdown are △overloading and overboarding △illegal expansion and remodeling △failure to undergo ship safety inspection △unlicensed operation and drunk driving △violation of cargo securing guidelines △violation of ship crew standards, which are criminal acts threatening public safety.
Before the special crackdown, the maritime police will create a culture of accident prevention through a two-week advance notice and publicity activities, and select types of marine safety accidents suitable for the characteristics of the jurisdictional waters by region and season to focus enforcement efforts.
Investigation Division Chief Seo Nam-su stated, “We will form a dedicated task force for intensive crackdown and mobilize all available forces such as criminal patrol boats and guard vessels to carry out three-dimensional enforcement activities, doing our best to proactively prevent large-scale marine accidents.”
