[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has rolled up its sleeves to promote the activation of recycling waste separation.

The district plans to lead environmental protection and resource circulation and conservation by implementing ▲on-site waste separation education ▲expansion of unmanned recycling collection machines (for cans and PET bottles) ▲promotion of waste separation using village bus advertisements by June.

First, the ‘On-Site Waste Separation Education’ is a practical, hands-on training where instructors visit directly to promote correct waste separation methods. This education, which has already been conducted in elementary, middle, and high schools, will now be extended to 100 locations within the district, including senior centers, targeting seniors and adults. The district prepared this education to prevent household waste and recyclable resources from being disposed of together.

Additionally, the district will increase the recovery rate of resources by installing more ‘Nephron’ unmanned recycling collection machines for cans and PET bottles. Based on artificial intelligence, ‘Nephron’ separates and compresses recyclables into cans and PET bottles for storage and is a waste separation machine that provides points redeemable for cash according to the amount deposited. Currently, three ‘Nephron’ machines are installed at ▲Guui 3-dong Community Center front ▲Gwangjin Square ▲Jayang Comprehensive Social Welfare Center.

Last year, the three Nephron machines separated and compressed approximately 3,600 kg of cans and 13,000 kg of PET bottles, with 6,700 users and rewards amounting to 6.2 million KRW. The district plans to install two more machines this time to expand the recycling collection infrastructure and activate high-quality recycling.

Finally, the district promotes waste separation methods and raises recycling awareness by using advertisements inside and outside 38 village buses running on 5 routes frequently used by residents. Short and repetitive phrases such as ‘Empty the contents and remove the labels,’ ‘What we need now are tumblers and reusable bags,’ and ‘Reduce disposable products, use reusable products’ encourage residents to take proactive action.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We are promoting recycling waste separation close to residents through various methods,” and added, “We will increase the recycling rate and create a Gwangjin-gu with active resource circulation.”
