Catholic Kwandong University 723 Students, Woosuk University 570 Students, etc.
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The number of universities that failed to recruit students through early and regular admissions this year has increased significantly compared to last year, with a considerable portion being regional universities.
According to Jongno Academy on the 21st, an analysis of the additional recruitment status by city and province for 17 universities nationwide in the 2023 academic year, announced by the Korea Council for University Education, revealed that a total of 180 universities planned to recruit an additional 17,439 students as of the 21st.
The number of universities increased by 23 from the previous year (157), while the number of students decreased by 520 from last year (17,959).
Among them, 112 were regional universities, an increase of 16 from the previous year (96).
The top seven regions with the highest number of additional recruits were all regional areas. The first place was Gyeongbuk region, recruiting an additional 2,889 students from 16 universities, accounting for 16.6% of the total additional recruitment.
Second place was Busan (2,144 students, 12.3%), and third was Jeonbuk (1,842 students, 10.6%). Gyeonggi was eighth with 5.7% (994 students), and Seoul was tenth with 4.4% (767 students).
By university, among the top 50 universities with the most additional recruitment, 49 were all regional universities. Catholic Kwandong University in Gangwon Province recruited the most with 723 additional students, followed by Woosuk University in Jeonbuk (570 students), Gyeongju University in Gyeongbuk (442 students), and Tongmyong University in Busan (438 students).
The university with the most additional recruitment in Seoul was Hongik University with 85 students, followed by Seokyeong University with 62, Kookmin University with 54, Kwangwoon University with 37, Soongsil University and Sejong University each with 36, and Dongguk University with 35.
Regional flagship national universities were also not in a good situation, with Jeju National University (150 students), Gyeongsang National University (77 students), and Kyungpook National University including its campuses (69 students) having the highest numbers of additional recruits.
The number of additional recruits at regional universities was 15,579, down 1,061 from last year (16,640), but this was directly attributed to the decrease in recruitment quotas at regional universities, which dropped by 4,805 from last year (212,448) to 207,643.
Meanwhile, additional recruitment by university will continue until the 28th, and the number of additional recruitment quotas is expected to keep changing until the recruitment deadline.
Lim Sung-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, analyzed, "The 2023 additional recruitment shows a tendency to ease somewhat due to the reduction of recruitment quotas at regional universities, while universities struggling to recruit through early and regular admissions are spreading even to the metropolitan area."
