Promotion of Customized Fire Safety Measures Following COVID-19 Easing

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] The Changwon Fire Headquarters in Gyeongnam is implementing fire safety measures during the spring season to reduce casualties caused by large-scale fires.

This year's spring safety measures focus on strengthening the social safety net through 13 initiatives across five areas, including proactive safety measures for fire-vulnerable facilities, preventive measures for fire-prone areas, and enhanced evacuation and preparedness for fire-vulnerable evacuees.

According to the Changwon Fire Headquarters, a total of 753 fires occurred in Changwon city during the spring season over the past five years, resulting in approximately 7.3 billion KRW in property damage and 26 casualties.

Seasonal analysis shows that spring accounts for 25.7% of the total fires, making it the second most frequent season after winter, while property damage in spring accounts for 34.8%, the highest among all seasons.

By type, fires in buildings and structures were the most frequent with 423 cases, followed by other fires with 186 cases, and vehicle fires with 117 cases.

The Changwon Fire Headquarters inspects multi-use facilities and fire-evacuation vulnerable facilities such as nursing hospitals and elderly care facilities during spring, a season characterized by strong winds, low humidity, and numerous local festivals attracting large crowds.

Additionally, they prepare for spring fires by inspecting local festival venues, deploying fire trucks in advance, and conducting fire safety education, utilizing all possible methods to prevent fires.

Kim Yong-jin, the Fire Headquarters Chief, stated, “It can never be overstated how important it is to prepare for fires in advance,” adding, “We will do our best to conduct pre-inspections and establish fire response measures for a safe Changwon city.”
