Agreed to Provide $1 Million in Support Through the UN
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The government announced on the 16th that it will provide humanitarian aid worth 1 million dollars to Syria, which suffered extensive damage from a large-scale earthquake.
Im Soo-seok, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at the regular briefing on the same day, “Regarding the large-scale earthquake damage that occurred in Syria on February 6, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs requested humanitarian assistance from the international community,” and added, “Our government has decided to provide humanitarian aid worth 1 million dollars to Syria through the UN.”
He also said, “We hope that our government’s support will help stabilize the victims who are facing difficulties and assist in recovery efforts.”
Since our government does not have direct diplomatic relations with Syria, the aid will be provided through a third-party organization, the UN, rather than directly to the country.
The strong earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria on the 6th caused massive casualties among Syrian residents as well. However, due to the ongoing civil war in Syria, international aid has not been able to reach effectively.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told reporters, “We will continue to monitor and observe the damage situation,” and added, “We plan to execute the aid as quickly as possible.”
