[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Jinwoo Sunim, the Chief Executive of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, has appointed Hyeil Sunim as the new head monk of Haeinsa Temple. On the 15th, Haeinsa recommended Hyeil Sunim as the new head monk, and on the 16th, Jinwoo Sunim approved the appointment, finalizing the decision.

Jinwoo Sunim stated, "Haeinsa is an important main temple known as a Beopbo Jongchal (法寶宗刹) among the head temples, but it has recently faced unexpected difficulties," adding, "Although it is a challenging responsibility, I believe that Hyeil Sunim, who was appointed today, is the optimal choice."

He continued, "Although it is a significant loss to the order as he is currently serving as the Director of the Education Institute, I expect that by carefully addressing the immediate tasks, Haeinsa will once again become a main temple worthy of its reputation." Hyeil Sunim currently serves as the Director of the Jogye Order Education Institute.

Hyeil Sunim expressed, "I apologize for moving to a new position before the results of the increase in monastic entrants, as I have not been in the role of Director of the Education Institute for long. I also apologize to the Director and all Buddhists for causing concern regarding recent matters related to Haeinsa," and added, "Though my abilities are limited, I will faithfully carry out the Director’s will and strive to restore Haeinsa to normalcy as soon as possible."

Since his ordination in 1986, Hyeil Sunim has served as a member of the 14th, 15th, and 17th Central Council of the Jogye Order, Chair of the Jogye Order School Management Committee, Secretary-General of the Central Council, Director of Planning at the General Affairs Office, Head of the Cultural Department, Chief Special Advisor on Religious Policies, Director of the Education Institute, and head monk of Bongguksa Temple.
