SKT and KT Offer 30GB Free Data
LGU+ Doubles Basic Data Allowance
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The three major telecom companies will provide free data for the entire month of March in line with the government's livelihood stabilization measures.
SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus announced on the 15th that they will offer free data to customers aged 19 and older.
SKT and KT will provide an additional 30GB of data to customers aged 19 and older. The 30GB data allowance is enough to enjoy nearly 30 hours of HD-quality videos on major online video streaming services (OTT) such as YouTube and Netflix over the course of a month.
SKT plans to provide detailed information on how to use the free data and the criteria within this month through the T World website and other channels. Customers can use an additional 30GB on top of the basic data included in their current plans without any separate application process. SKT will form a ‘traffic task force’ to ensure that service quality remains stable despite increased traffic, so customers can enjoy the benefits reliably.
SKT CEO Yoo Young-sang said, “We decided to provide free data to offer some help to the public amid the difficult economic environment,” adding, “SKT will continue to strive to provide customer-friendly products and services based on stable communication services.”
KT will notify eligible customers via text message before February 28. Individual customers aged 19 and older (as of February 28) who do not use unlimited data plans will automatically receive 30GB of free data on March 1 without any separate application process.
The free data can be used from March 1 to 31. When using data, the free data will be consumed first automatically, and once it is used up, the basic data provided by the customer's subscribed plan will be deducted. Detailed information can be checked directly on the KT website or the My KT app.
LG Uplus will double the basic data amount included in the customer's subscribed plan. For example, a subscriber to the '5G Simple+' plan, which provides 31GB of data, will receive an additional 31GB, allowing a total of 62GB. Customers subscribed to unlimited plans, plans providing 100GB or more, or plans that provide daily data will receive tethering data for use on second devices such as tablet PCs instead.
The additional data can be registered by accessing the URL sent via MMS from March 2 to 31. It can be used throughout March and will not be carried over.
An LG Uplus representative said, “Due to the recent global economic downturn and the sharp rise in prices felt by consumers, we voluntarily prepared support measures to ease the burden on customers,” adding, “We will continue to consider various ways to contribute to price stabilization in the future.”
