From daycare children’s ‘Love Piggy Banks’ to single elderly citizens’ property donations, warm-hearted gestures continue
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “I want to share with those in need before I die.”
Mr. Kim, a 91-year-old resident of Mangwoo 3-dong, Jungnang-gu, donated part of his property to help neighbors in need. Having left North Korea and living alone without children or relatives, Mr. Kim expressed his wish to give back to society before his death and made a donation.
Last December, Mr. Song, a 71-year-old who visited the Myeonmok 7-dong Community Center, also donated a piggy bank he had saved over time to help neighbors in need. The piggy bank contained various coins and bills totaling 450,780 KRW. Promising to continue helping as long as he could, the elderly man visited again on January 25 to make an additional donation, showing his heartfelt support for his neighbors.
These warm-hearted contributions helped Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) achieve the fundraising goal for the 2023 Warm Winter campaign ahead of schedule.
The district office, together with the Seoul Community Chest of Korea, has been promoting the 2023 Warm Winter campaign since November last year to assist neighbors in need and spread a culture of giving within the community. As of February 6, about a week before the campaign’s end on February 14, Jungnang-gu received donations and goods totaling approximately 1.692 billion KRW, surpassing the target amount early.
In addition to the warm donations from elderly citizens, the ‘Love Piggy Bank’ funds collected by local daycare children’s small hands amounted to nearly 40 million KRW, and even small business owners facing difficulties actively participated, warming the local community.
A restaurant in Sangbong 2-dong accumulated donations of 1,000 KRW per delivery review and donated 1 million KRW on January 27. The restaurant also publicized this initiative in its store information, providing customers with an indirect opportunity to participate in the donation, contributing to the spread of the donation culture.
Jungnang-gu plans to present awards and letters of appreciation to individuals and organizations who showed warm love for neighbors through donations and goods in the future.
Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi of Jungnang-gu said, “The warmth of Jungnang-gu residents helping their neighbors has steadily accumulated, surpassing the target amount even before the campaign’s end date, allowing us to feel once again the warm hearts of our citizens. Thanks to these compassionate residents, Jungnang-gu will continue to advance as a better city to live in. We will do our utmost to realize ‘Welfare Jungnang,’ where the district extends warm hands to those marginalized and in need of help.”
