"Ordering Many Foreign Cars and Deliveries to Appear Wealthy"
Wore Protective Suit to Conceal Identity During Crime
A delivery driver in his 40s, who usually delivered packages to a couple in their 70s, was sentenced to a heavy prison term for committing a robbery in broad daylight against them.
According to Yonhap News on the 10th, the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Lee Young-jin) sentenced A (41) to seven years in prison on charges of robbery and injury.
On September 12 last year, A entered the living room through the veranda of the countryside house of the couple in their 70s, B and his wife, holding a weapon and demanded "30 million won," snatching one credit card. During the crime, A also struck B's face multiple times, causing injuries.
A, who was a delivery driver, was experiencing financial difficulties. Seeing a foreign car parked at B's house and the fact that many packages were delivered there, he assumed B was wealthy and targeted him for the crime.
A showed meticulousness by even wearing protective clothing to conceal his identity. While demanding money from the couple, he mentioned "son's surgery fees," but investigations revealed this was a lie.
At the time of the crime, after receiving the card from B, A tied B's hands with a pre-prepared cable tie and tried to find other valuables with B's wife, C. However, when B freed himself and ran away, a physical struggle ensued. A bit B's finger and then repeatedly punched B's face, causing injury.
In court, A's side argued, "The injuries B sustained were minor and did not interfere with daily life, so they do not constitute injury," and "A only hit B to escape after being bitten on the finger, not with the intent of robbery," denying the establishment of robbery and injury charges.
However, the court did not accept this and ruled guilty based on the significant bleeding on B's face and the circumstances leading to the assault.
The court pointed out, "This was a planned crime with very bad nature, committed by taking advantage of the usual delivery work to the victims' home, preparing protective clothing to conceal personal information."
Regarding sentencing, the court explained, "The injuries B sustained cannot be considered minor, and the elderly victims, who regarded their home as the safest place, suffered the crime defenselessly, likely enduring aftereffects for some time. Also, the defendant has not been forgiven by the victims."
