Selected for Urban Flood Damage Pre-Estimation Demonstration Project
Total Investment of 3.6 Billion KRW Including 2.8 Billion KRW National Funding This Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Gyeongbuk Province is embarking on a project to establish a smart response system to prepare for urban flooding disasters.
On the 10th, Gyeongbuk Province announced that it was selected for the 2023 Digital Twin-based Urban Flooding Smart Response System Demonstration Project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The project was applied for targeting the Pohang area, which suffered the greatest flooding damage from Typhoon Hin Nam No last year.
The digital twin-based technology refers to creating an identical object in a virtual space to the real one and verifying it through simulation.
A total project cost of 3.6 billion KRW will be invested, including 2.85 billion KRW in national funds and 750 million KRW in local funds.
This project aims to build a system that analyzes and predicts real-time situations reflecting regional characteristics for each scenario, as damage varies depending on terrain and environment even with the same rainfall amount.
The demonstration project aims to reduce loss of life and property by establishing a data collection system for urban flood analysis and prediction, real-time flood monitoring and smart remote control system, inland and external water-linked urban flood prediction simulation, and an integrated urban flood control system and response manual.
Gyeongbuk Province plans to expedite the project implementation and complete it within this year.
Kim Byung-sam, Director of Disaster Safety Office, said, “We are making efforts to protect the property and lives of residents, including securing the largest national budget of 125.1 billion KRW for natural disaster prevention projects nationwide this year. Through this project, we will predict and manage urban flooding damage in advance and create a safe Gyeongbuk Province against various disasters.”
